R...have been reading your posts a few places for a while, and decided to give Random Rants a go because of that. Have no idea about who you are other than you seem to like to think about stuff and write about what you think. And write about it pretty well. So, here I am.
I'm not looking to start a debate here, since I likely couldn't carry it much farther than posing this question. But regarding formal / substantive freedoms, how they differ, and which one deserves more or less of our attention, is it not of equal importance to always be mindful and vigilant about our formal freedoms since if they were reduced in some way, a reduction in substantive freedom would surely follow? And I find myself wondering how, exactly, we pay more attention to the substantive side of things. Would be interested in an example or two of that when you have time.
