BTW...An English teacher and a rhetorician, eh? Guess that explains a couple of things. But I'm sort of fascinated by the dead R being elected to office. Have heard tell of a few dead folks voting, but not vice versa. Would really like to know more if you can elaborate without putting anything out here that you wouldn't want to in the way of state or location or whatever. If not, no harm, no foul.

It started off normally enough, local business owner (the business was a brothel, btw, which says something about the strangeness of some things in NV) runs for state assembly with the sort of standard MAGA rhetoric. This was IIRC, during the 2018 midterms.

About a month before the election he drops dead of a heart attack. Too late to take his name off the ballot. It was already fairly clear he was going to be the winner.

I forget who the state GoP chose to fill in for him.

I am not sure how many people voted for him because they didn't know he was dead versus who voted for him because of the R. Wouldn't be surprised that a lot of people did not know he was dead lol.

Have to say, seeing the details, I find this quite interesting, but not very surprising...not even the brothel part, really. (Or maybe I should say "sadly".) I expect it's pretty common for folks to cast a vote based strictly on the R (or the D) and not the name. Here in MI that's quite easy, since we have "straight ticket" voting, which facilitates this by providing a choice box at the top of the ballot for the parties. Check the party, and every candidate so designated gets a vote. The non-partisan (?!) positions such as judgeships, state university trustees, etc. (as well as any ballot proposals) must still be filled in individually, if any of these people care to take the trouble. But it pretty much amounts to "check one and done" for the folks who vote based on party membership only.

Thanks for the reply.

Bells dinging on most all of this. (Insert sound of screaming here.)

So many places to aim at for blame that the most sawed-off double-barreled coach gun wouldn't have a wide enough spread to cover all the targets. Very frustrating, indeed.
